Stomach By-pass Surgery

This method, also known as laparoscopic gastric bypass, refers to a frequently performed bariatric surgery. It is possible to manage the successful obesity treatment process with gastric bypass. While the volume is reduced with the said surgery, the absorption of nutrients passes through the small intestines. This causes the path to be shortened.

A large part of the stomach is removed, leaving approximately 30 to 50 cc at the beginning of the stomach. In addition, some of the small intestines are connected to the stomach. In this direction, it becomes possible for patients to be satiated with much smaller portions. In addition, the absorption of a significant part of high-calorie foods is prevented.

How is Gastric By-Pass Surgery Performed?

Gastric by-pass is performed by laparoscopic method. Recently, robotic surgery can also be preferred. This operation is performed through 4-6 holes with a diameter of 1 cm. Gastric by-pass surgery, which is known to be a similar operation to sleeve gastrectomy surgery, allows the stomach to be reduced. With this operation, approximately 95% of the stomach is bypassed.

With a professional surgical method, a part of the stomach, which is separated into two, is bypassed by the 12 finger intestines. It is not removed from the body. This ensures that the intestines continue to function. In this way, the consumed foods are prevented from passing through the 12 finger intestines. Thanks to the surgery, it is aimed to be satiated with less food and to ensure the absorption of some of the food taken.

After Gastric By-Pass Surgery

Patients are followed up for 5-6 days after surgery. After discharge, patients are controlled by dietitians. In this direction, a nutrition plan is carried out. During the first year after the operation, apart from bariatric surgery, psychiatry, endocrinology and dietitian specialists are followed up.

What are the Gastric By-Pass Types?

Gastric by-pass types are generally as follows:

Roux en Y Gastric By-Pass: During the operation, the stomach is divided into two, with a volume of 25-30 cc. While the small stomach remains in the body, the larger part is removed.

Mini Gastric By-Pass: This operation allows the stomach to take the shape of a tube with the use of special stapler tools. Then, the small intestine segment is formed from a distance of 200 cm and its connection with the stomach pouch is provided.
